How do earthquakes occur?

Hi everybody and welcome back to my blog! Have you wondered how earthquakes happen? Well, that's what I did for writing! For writing this week we have to pick a topic and write an explanation text on that topic. My topic was on how earthquakes occur. Here is my writing.

How do earthquakes occur?

You might have seen earthquakes where you live. Earthquakes happen in some places and avoid others. But have you ever wondered what causes them and how?

The tectonic plates

The Earth is divided into three main layers: The crust ( which is the ground we step on), the mantle (this is where the tectonic plates move around), the outer core and the inner core. It is also divided into seven plates: African, Antarctic, Eurasian, Indo-Australian, North American, Pacific and South American. These move around so slowly that you can’t even feel them moving. These are what causes an earthquake.

How do earthquakes occur?

If you have seen weird cracks on the ground, these are known as fault lines, this is where two plates meet. Fault lines can be formed by two plates colliding, subducting, spreading or slipping.  As the plates grind together, they get stuck and pressure builds up. Finally, the pressure between the plates is so great that they break loose. Depending on how much pressure has built up, the ground may tremble slightly or shake forcefully.

Can earthquakes be cause by reservoirs and dams?

Earthquakes can be affected by reservoirs and dams.New reservoirs could cause earthquakes due to the change in stress because of the weight of water, or by increased groundwater pore pressure that decreases the effective strength of the rock under the reservoir. Globally, there are over 100 identified cases of earthquakes that scientists believe were triggered by reservoirs (see Gupta 2002). The most serious case may be the 7.9-magnitude Sichuan earthquake in May 2008, which killed an estimated 80,000 people and has been linked to the construction of the Zipingpu Dam.

In conclusion, there are many reasons why earthquakes happen. They are either caused by the tectonic plates or by humans. But how do stop these earthquakes from happening? We can’t stop earthquakes, but we can get help from seismologists, who will be able to predict them and give us warning.

Glossary:

tectonic plates: A tectonic plate (also called lithospheric plate) is a massive, irregularly shaped slab of solid rock, generally composed of both continental and oceanic lithosphere. Plate size can vary greatly, from a few hundred to thousands of kilometers across; the Pacific and Antarctic Plates are among the largest. Plate thickness also varies greatly, ranging from less than 15 km for young oceanic lithosphere to about 200 km or more for ancient continental lithosphere (for example, the interior parts of North and South America).

Seismologist: Scientists who study earthquakes.

I hope you enjoy. What was your topic?

Grid references and compass directions

Hello everybody and welcome back to my blog! For maths this week we are learning about grid references and compass directions. For our create task we have to create a mini map and either choose to put grid references, compass directions or both on the map. We have to create a journey on our maps. Here is my map:

Here is the link to my map if you want to see the questions.

What does your map look like?

What hobbies do you have?

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog! This week for reading we are leaning about hobbies and how it impacts on my happiness. We learned about the benefits and non benefits of our hobbies. For our create task we have to create a DLO ( digital learning object) that shows our understanding of hobbies for happiness. Here is my DLO:

How did you show your understanding?

My haiku poem

Hi everyone and welcome back to my blog! This week for writing  we have been learning about poems. We learned that there are different types of poems, but we only focused on haiku poems, riddle poems rhymed poetry and shape poems. Our create task was to pick and write a poem. What type of mindset do you have?

Hello guys and welcome back to my blog! This week for reading we've been learning about mindset and what it looks like for us. For our create we have to choose a person who have shown great grit and to create a DLO showcasing what we took out of the readings we read. I chose Nancy Wake because she had shown grit during the French resistance. She tried her best to not get caught when she is spying the French soldiers. Here is my DLO

Grit challenge

This term for our PBL we had to do three activities to get a better understanding of happiness. One of them was a grit challenge. For our create we have to create a grit quote, meme or visual aid so that people can draw inspiration from them. I have chosen to do a meme. Here is my meme:

What have you done for yours?

Emotional Literacy

This term for our PBL we had to do three activities to get a better understanding of happiness. One of them was Emotional literacy. For our create we had to fill out the times in our lives when we feel like the emoji. On the other side, we have to fill out how we  can combat the feeling or enhance it. Here a screenshot of my task:

If you want to see it clearly. Here is the link! What would you do if you were doing this?

Youth Peace week

Hi everyone! For the past two weeks in reading we have been learning about inner peace for outer actions. We did the reading about whare tapa wha which means the four walls. Their names are: Social well being, emotional well being, spiritual and physical well being. I need to work on my emotional well being because I can have a lot of emotional outbursts sometimes, the one I'm the best is my physical.

What is yours?

Golden girl disgraced!

Hi again! In the past few weeks for writing, we have been writing an article about Goldilocks and the three bears. Here is my article, I hope you enjoy reading it:

Golden girl disgrace!

Sly child on the loose in the local woodlands.

On an early Sunday morning, a blonde whom we know as Goldilocks, ruthlessly breaks into the bears’ house in Fairytale Woods. Police believed that this was a targeted attack, due to the way

she entered the house.

Did you lock your doors and windows!? Hearing strange sounds at night? Realising some of your stuff is broken down or stolen?

Word in the woods

Father bear, aged 50 and currently employed, explained how hard this attack had been on her family. “My child ain’t sleeping proper ’cause he’s so scared of that girl. We were so happy before this ’appened.”

This case was underlined by PC Bobby Badger.“Several homeowners have also reported that their house has also been attacked before and police are on the search for the criminal, who might still be loitering in the woods, ready to attack another household.”

Once upon a times’ view

Since the beginning of March 2017, crimes committed by this Golden girl have increased by 80%. Half of the town is too scared to leave their houses to go anywhere. This includes murder, tramping trees, thievery and vandalism. The calmness of our FairyTale community (especially on the west side of the woods) has been seriously agitated since this young criminal has been on the loose.

Moving forward

Moving forward, the police have released a statement promising the following actions will be put in place:

• Late-night patrols

• More officers on the beat • Faster responses to calls

After this, A newly formed Woodland Watch - led by the Owls and other sharp-sighted birds, has organised a daily surveillance patrol to help prevent the criminal from coming back.

It is strongly advised that you do not leave your houses unattended and call

The police immediately if something happens.

It’s a hoot peering down on all this from the canopy. Instead of chasing their tails, the police should consult the clever creatures.

What is your favorite part of the article?

Family "accidentally " buys 2,300 toilet rolls! :0

Hello everybody and welcome back to my blog! This week for reading we looked at the different genres of a newspaper. We have been looking at Kiwi kids news and pick 3 article, each from a different genres and write our thoughts on the article and why. Where possible also identify some of the shapes we have looked at in writing, or if we can create a better headline the author could have used.

Article 1: Title: Family accidentally buys 2,300 toilet rolls .Genre: Interest Articles

I chose this article because it sounds funny and interesting. I find it weird because who would  accidentally buy 2,300 rolls of paper! If I was to write it, the title would name it: 2,300 toilet rolls "accidentally " delivered to a family

Article 2: Title: Drones used to control the weather .Genre: Weather

I chose this article because it would be cool to have drones to control the weather and so that we can predict the weather faster. If I was the editor  I would rename it: New drones invented for the weather!

Article 3: New frog species discover in New Guinea .Genre: World

I chose this article because I want to know what the frog looks like and what it's called. The frog looked really similar to the Australian tree frog but slightly smaller and its skin color is chocolate brown. If I was to write this article I would give the name: Chocolate frogs discover in New Guinea!.

What is your favorite article and why?
